One More Scroll

First concept

The monothematic element I wanted to highlight on when first thinking of a subject to base this short film around. I looked at the modern day usage of “addiction” and how this new and addictive form of short content is now common place within large social media apps of today as impacted our lives.

Taking inspiration from my own personal experience of wasting countless hours on my phone, due to this new form of easy instant gratification of videos only lasting seconds. I resailed how it had negatively effected my studying not being able to study for a long period of time as I would always finding myself on my phone without even knowing it. This form of a subconscious derision driven by my brain’s need for a quick hit of dopamine on which these types of videos thrive on I knew I had to quit.

What I improved on during this project

Editing an important part of trying to convey to the audience what my ideology was about within this short film, though the visual cue of a phone screen effect I allowed the acting and post production elements to merge creating a subconscious link between the two. This allowed the effect to look natural and diegetic within the multiple shots.

Being able to show clean and seamless edits between the different angles was important for the match cut effect I wanted to create. This type of transition was a large part of the longing for disconnect people get from this invisible quickly spreading form of additive social media videos.

When working towards the idea of this short film I new I wanted to impermeant a group project into my portfolio.

This short film allowed me to express my team skills and showcasing how I can approach an idea and impermeant the groups ideas as well as contributing ideas of my own. This is important when working with people who are aiming towards the same goal, each with a different and unique idea and perspective to the situation and project.

Having multiple people on board this short film project was immensely helpful especially as I’ve been an induvial film maker for most of my works. Although shooting projects individually you do have more control on the aspects such as when and what you want to shoot with only your planning and vision in mind. Group projects still has that element of what your vision as the Director and/or the Director of photography is going to be. Allowing to be able to plan out the shot type with an actor already in place was hugely helpful as I got an idea of how I could frame them in each shot. This came into full effect when setting up for crucial elements such as the depth of field within an scene.

Final result

Being able to work on a group project to achieve this short film was a fun task to work on and I think this short film achieves its intent of showcasing the cycle of scrolling we can find ourselves in within this new form of videos.
