Storyboards & Scripts

Storyboards and scripts are a key part of the pre production aspect of film making as it gives a foundation of which the film can stand on.

The script writing gives the films its narrative and allowing the whole cast and crew to get an idea of what they need to translate from words off a script into a real form of media. The script can give directions of a scene within the film such as, how many people are in the scene, where the location is, what part of the narrative is it in, making it either linear or non linear direction of storytelling. It is up to the cast and crew to make this physical.

This is where a role such as the Director of Photography helps get an idea of what camera shot works well for a certain segment of the scene, having to plan out what the text reads into a cinematic experience, highlighting on the emotions written within the script. This also helps on the day of shooting, knowing what part of the scenes needs multiple angles or different lighting.

This level of preparation is vitality important when working on any project whether that be an individual, group or professional project.

Script

Here is a segment of my A level Film studies course work where I invented a sci-fi genre dystopian future of a cyberpunk aesthetic.

Storyboard

Translating the scripts text to a photographic storyboard was challenging as I didn’t know how to incorporate the sci fi elements into the photos. Instead I adapted to the situation and only focused on the segments of the scene I could illustrate to the viewer. This allowed me to test myself on how I can challenge myself with a task that may seem impossible. But allowing myself to think of a different approach to the situation help me achieve a good outcome of putting text to screen.

Storyboard vs Final shot

Script

This short film script allowed me to be clear with my intension during the shooting session. This allowed me to get the shot I envisioned across more easily with the actor following the different actions within the script and how the story would play out.

Storyboard

Using the storyboard as a refence throughout the shooting saved a lot of time when preparing for a particular shot as I knew how I was going to convey either emotion or how the environment reacted with the actor.
